The three villages, Burton Joyce, Bulcote and Stoke Bardolph sit on the banks of the River Trent just a few miles out of the busy city centre of Nottingham. In 1996, a small committee was formed to build a sports facility catering for a couple of cricket and football teams and a rugby club. The idea then was to also hold an annual fete or gala on the site, but apart from the original event in 1998 there was no further interest until the idea was resurrected by Barbara Bowmar, in 2002, with the first new style gala taking place in May 2003. Now, in 2008, the gala is in its sixth year and the Poplars has reached its tenth anniversary and is home to sixteen football clubs, four cricket teams, crown green bowling and an archery club. What of the Gala itself that has grown from a one day event, the first Bank Holiday in May with one large tent, 80 ft by 40 ft to four days of entertainment for all ages and a large open span 120 ft by 65 ft marquee. Last year saw a youngsters disco on Friday night, a Queen tribute band entertaining 400 hundred “youngsters” aged between 16 and 80 dancing to “We Are the Champions”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and many other favourites on Saturday, Sunday saw a football presentation event attended by many of the home teams plus stars from the Notts County squad, and the Monday had 1,500 people enjoying a family afternoon out with entertainment for all ages, teas, craft stalls, arena displays and a flying model aircraft display.
